’26 FILMMAKER BIBLE

2026 FILMMAKER BIBLE

Introduction

Welcome to Slamdance ‘26!

To help you prepare and make the most of your festival experience, the office team has created the 2026 Festival Bible. Look at it as a “how to” guide, and a way to give you a head start on all things Slamdance that you may need to know and might find useful.

You are stepping into an artist-run organization that is programmed by alumni, who are excited to showcase your work in Los Angeles. Our move to this city, in the heart of the entertainment industry, is allowing us to continue the advancement of Slamdance’s mission: to provide an accessible and dynamic community for truly independent, visionary filmmakers and creators. We’re now busy completing an inclusive and compelling festival hub for creativity and connection where festival passes cost just $50.

Slamdance ‘26 will recognize and honor the spirit of our community, while celebrating this wonderful place that we call home with our fantastic festival program.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Accessibility and inclusivity are not just Slamdance’s core values — they are the foundation of everything we do. Since its inception, Slamdance has been committed to creating an environment where independent artists, filmmakers, and audiences from all backgrounds can come together to celebrate bold, innovative storytelling. Our move from Utah to Los Angeles has been a deliberate step to expand that commitment, ensuring we can better serve the diverse and vibrant creative community we support.

One of the driving factors behind Slamdance’s move to Los Angeles was to guarantee that our festival venues are fully accessible to everyone. In Utah, we faced challenges with physical accessibility due to terrain and infrastructure that made it difficult for some attendees, including those with disabilities, to fully participate. Los Angeles, with its more inclusive infrastructure, allows us to better accommodate the needs of all festival-goers, whether through ADA-compliant venues, improved transportation options, or accessible spaces for programming like our Unstoppable Initiative.

It is essential that you create a promotional campaign for your film.

Be proactive, and proudly promote your film before, during, and after the festival. Every film (and filmmaker) is different; they all have a different strategy that is right for them. But it’s always those that put in the most effort which have big things happen to them. Consider your audience and how to reach them when deciding how to market your film. When you finish your film, you’re only half done. Getting it out there is the other half!

Please note Slamdance ‘26 is located in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles and our primary locations are a short walk from one another.

This is the person who shows up, stands up, claps louder, goes further and does more than is asked of them. This is the person who made your Slamdance experience special: and who deserves to be recognized for their 110% commitment to making the festival shine. Please note that this is for Slamdance filmmakers and cast and crew members who are attending the festival in person. Each film’s point of contact person will receive a form during the festival to vote!

Additionally, one Episode is also selected for the Summer Chastant Episodic Award. This is coordinated with the Slamdance  programmers in selecting the awardee.

Established in 2018, The Slamdance Russo Brothers Fellowship gives a deserving filmmaker selected by Slamdance Film Festival alumni Anthony and Joe Russo, the opportunity to have a mentorship with the creative team at AGBO in Downtown Los Angeles.

Partnering with a sales team for your film’s festival launch can be invaluable. However, finding the right partner to sell the film for you can be difficult. The most important thing is to have a frank and honest discussion with a potential sales team to convey your release vision for the film, and to make sure you’re on the same page from the start.

A sales team should create a symbiotic relationship with your publicity team to better sell your film. Premiering your film in Los Angeles is an invaluable platform, and we want to ensure that your sales team thoroughly focuses their attention on your film.

We suggest that you research which films (perhaps similar to yours) got deals out of recent Slamdance festivals, and find out what sales team was on the project. Make a connection with the filmmakers and ask for a recommendation!

But also, keep your expectations in check. Most films don’t get distribution at any festival, and the ones that do usually have producers or reps who have been working on deals prior to the festival. That said, it does happen: this year Nick Beaulieu’s documentary feature My Omaha was picked up for distribution by Real Life Movie Club, and Julio Palacio’s short Makayla’s Voice: A Letter To The World was distributed by Netflix.

After the festival, having met with reps and been presented with deals, you might decide to do some form of self-distribution, or modified-self distribution. For the right films with the right team of dedicated and savvy filmmakers, that could be the right way to go.

Recently, Slamdance has stepped up to provide filmmakers with more hybrid distribution support involving year-round webinars and case studies, as well as the creation of our own channel and theatrically exhibiting films On The Road. Here are some samples of our hybrid distribution support we recommend checking out:

Additionally, through the collaboration of alumni and industry professionals, we have just completed our first Film Distribution Booklet of Much Knowledge in support of your distribution planning beyond the festival circuit.

For Slamdance ‘26, we are taking our filmmaker support one step further and partnering with Utopia who have worked successfully with several Slamdance filmmakers before will offer a traditional theatrical distribution deal to a 2026 Grand Prize Winner. In addition, Utopia’s technology suite including Powerflix and Altavod will offer aggregation and bespoke digital distribution opportunities to all competition films.

Below is a partial list of distributors who have acquired Slamdance films over the past several years. We encourage you to do further research on their individual businesses, in order to better understand how your film might fit with them.

  • Freestyle Media
  • Gravitas
  • Utopia
  • Shout Factory
  • MUBI
  • ARRAY
  • Kino Lorber
  • Juno Films
  • Netflix
  • Amazon
  • Paramount

And finally, if you need an attorney for legal business associated with distribution or future productions, we recommend Aditya Ezhuthachan at Pessah Law Group.

Slamdance is built on our slogan, “by filmmakers, for filmmakers.” Nowhere is that more evident than in the passion and vision of our programming team, many of whom call Los Angeles home. Not only do these dedicated individuals shape our current lineup, they also help cultivate our festival’s future.

Alumni are our lifeblood, and every new filmmaker who joins our lineup this year will have the opportunity to become a programmer for the 2027 Slamdance Film Festival and beyond. This vibrant, collaborative ecosystem will ensure that Slamdance continues to reflect genuine independent voices, and that the artists themselves remain at the heart of our decision-making process.

While this Bible serves as a practical guide, Slamdance is ultimately built on the work of the programmers and captains who’ve championed the bold, fearless storytelling that defines us. They are, and will always be, the beating heart of Slamdance. They’ve watched, debated, and fought for films that they believe in, standing firmly for the authentic visions that embody our unique spirit. Their commitment ensures that every story we present is truly independent, inclusive, and impactful.

Our captains — who lead with grace, resilience, and determination — represent the collaboration that keeps Slamdance thriving. Their dedication to their teams and to the art of programming is what makes Slamdance more than just a festival; it’s a home for filmmakers who might otherwise go unheard.

By merging our LA-based programming approach with Slamdance’s broader ethos of inclusion and accessibility, we honor the promise of “by filmmakers, for filmmakers.” Together, we will continue to open doors for every artist who is ready to share their story with the world.

Slamdance Group is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that supports emerging artists. The mission of Slamdance is to function as an agent of change in filmmaking and digital media, helping to make the creative works of artists with divergent voices accessible to everyone. Established by a wild bunch of filmmakers who wanted to showcase the unfiltered voice of independent artists, Slamdance is a community, an experience and a statement. We are a qualifying film festival for the Oscars, BAFTA awards and Canadian Screen Awards.
